St. Vincent and the Grenadines were not able to survive a 5 set battle against St. Lucia in an epic final of the ECVA Under 21 Male Zonal Championship in Antigua. At the end of the game the SVG players were overcome with emotion realising they were not able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and secure not only the gold medal but also a berth in the NORCECA Continental Championship scheduled for Mexico in 2020 which would have completed a three-peat for the country after winning the competition in 2011 and 2015.

After pool play St. Vincent and the Grenadines were ranked second behind St. Lucia who they had lost to in a thrilling 5 setter (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 11-15). St. Lucia was able to come back from a 2-0 deficit to take the win 3 sets to 2. In their semi-final game, St. Vincent and the Grenadines played Antigua who they had won 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) in pool play but had to overcome a one game deficit to win in 4 sets (17-25, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24) in front of a rowdy Antiguan home crowd.

This set up the final between St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia who had easily defeated St. Kitts and Nevis in their semi-final game. St. Vincent and the Grenadines got off to a slow start losing the first two sets 22-25 and 21-25 but stormed back winning the next two sets 25-23 and 25- 19. This set up the 5th set with SVG trying to do what St. Lucia had done to them in pool play but this was not to be as they conceded the set 9-15.

For their efforts SVG’s Enrico Louraine copped the best receiver and best digger, Kyle Liverpool shared the best spiker award and Shemor Baynes shared the best middle blocker award.

Final team placing: 1 – S. Lucia, 2- St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3- Antigua and Barbuda, 4- St Kitts and Nevis.

Back row l-r – Vance Andrews (coach), Marques Thomas, Shadron Delpesche, Jamaar Crooper (captain), Kyle Liverpool, Shemor Baynes, Daryl Franklyn (assistant coach)

THE TRIUMPHANT LIFE OF JULIUS ANTHONY

The Minister and the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, join with the rest of the National Sporting Fraternity to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, (both biological and sporting) of the late iconic, Julius ‘Godfather of Sport in North Leeward’ Anthony better known as Jules. We urge that we all remain strong in these difficult times, as the Most High knows best. Further along we will understand why!

Jules, the father, the patriot, the husband, the iconic Sport Ambassador and Sport Journalist, the brother, the comrade, we will definitely miss your contributions to the development of Sport in SVG and specifically in North Leeward.

Jules, a stalwart employee at our lone electricity service provider VINLEC, for over three decades, joined the family at the National Sports Council, as a member of the Board of Directors in 2011 and in 2012, he was elevated to the Deputy Chairman position. Then upon the voluntary resignation of former Chairman Teddy James in 2013 he was elevated to the Chairman of the National Sports Council, where he served with distinction until 2016. When Jules was no longer the Chair of the National Sports Council he continued to demonstrate his true labour of love for Sport and country as he continued to serve as a Committee Member of the National Sports Council Board, giving his sterling contribution to the new Chairman Branch and the Board on a whole, keeping the Council family united, we know that Jules looked forward for every third Wednesday in each month to meet with in comradery with his NSC family, Wednesday 20 November 2018 was a difficult day for all Board Members in that room.

We will have our heated Board Room discussions from time to time, with tempers and voices, increase, but no one can say that they have ever seen Julius Anthony get vex in that Board Room. He took his seldom licks when they came in a jovial manner with a smile. Even as a Board family, when we have our tense moments and little coldness, Jovial Team Leader and or salient member Jules will break the ice and bring back peace by making a joke of the situation. Jules the man of integrity was always willing and ready to take responsibility for his actions or inactions, even if it requires him to tender his resignation as a matter of principle, if the matter warrants it in his opinion. He was one of the first persons after each Monthly Board Meeting or Sub Committee Meeting to inquire if any Board Members, had time for a now in thing a ‘3 for 10’. Chill Spot and or Black Rose, the majority choice, will truly miss Jules and his National Sports Council colleagues after Monthly Meetings and or Sub Committee Meetings.

Jules loved North Leeward, he headed the Sport and Culture Organization in that area for decades, he secured sponsorships and always gave his best, time energy and monies to North Leeward and its people, he managed and developed Sport and Culture in North Leeward for decades, up until his death, he had great plans for the Semi and Finals at his treasured Cumberland Playing Field, in the VINLEC North Leeward Cricket T20 Finals on December 1 and 2. Likewise the NACA/Team Athletics SVG Most Challenging 10K on November 18. Jules was there in spirit on the 18 and he will be there in spirit tomorrow and Sunday.

Jules was appointed as a National Cricket Selector some years ago by the SVG Cricket Association. In his first meeting of the Committee Jules brought along his list of persons for National Selection and on that list, Jules had 14 players/young cricketers, who he felt in all his heart that they could have made the trial for SVG National Cricket Team, even though they could not make the North Leeward Team. Jules felt they could have made National Trials. That is the kind of love the man had for North Leeward and its people.

Jules voluntarily resigned as the President of the North Leeward Sport & Culture Association, after decades of a Labour Love! But in January of 2017, he led in the mobilization of all the resources to recognize all the outstanding Sport Men and Women in North Leeward for 2016 in a gala Award Ceremony, which was second to none.

As Manager of the Providence Electronics North Leeward Cricket Team which participated I n our National 2018 Premier Division, Jules ensured that all transportation were paid and all players had more than adequate meals, refreshment and equipment, in order for them to give of their best. Likewise the Joseph DaSilva North Leeward Master Cricketers. Even though he was late and don’t matter what Jules was doing , his meetings and transportation of fellow Executive Members to and from the North Leeward Sport and Culture Association meetings took precedence!

Jules contribution to football and Sport Journalism in SVG must be underscored and recognized. Jules as a true trend setter, initiator and icon sort out his niche and became famous for his daily interviews and midnight Facebook postings. Anyone who visited SVG, as a component of our Sport Tourism Product looked forward for Jules midnight’s updates. I am sure his spirit was at AIA on Friday 16, at 7 am when Vincy Heat journeyed to Turks and Caicos. How sad Jules did not want to live to witness that 3-2 defeat.

Julius ‘the Godfather of Sport in North Leeward’ Anthony. We truly love, honour and respect you for your sterling contribution towards the development of sports in SVG. Your exemplary hard work and commitment, can and will never go in vain. You made your significant contributions towards the development of Sport in SVG and North Leeward and for it we are grateful and SVG is better for it.

On behalf of your comrade Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Hon, Cecil McKie, the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, the Chairman, Board of Directors and the Management and staff of National Sports Council, the Sporting Fraternity in SVG. We extend heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family (biological and Sporting) of Jules.

May his soul rest in eternal peace!!!

Stakeholders in Sport Start the Year with Successful Meeting

Arnos Vale, St. Vincent and the Grenadines - The Ministry of Tourism Sports and Culture and the National Sports Council successfully hosted the first meeting of Stakeholders in Sports for 2019 on Saturday February 16th. The meeting was chaired by Minister of Tourism Sports and Culture, the Honorable Cecil McKie who in his opening remarks declared 2019 as being a busy year for sports. Items on the agenda included the Sports Against Crime Initiative, Update on the 2018 National Sports Awards slated for March 16th 2019, Reports from Sporting Associations and presentation on antidoping by Dr. Lennox Adams.

Fourteen affiliated Sporting Association were represented and made presentations at the meeting on their plans and challenges. Associations expressed appreciation to the National Lotteries Authority for continued financial support and the National Sports Council for use of facilities as well as facilitating various duty free requests.

The Department of Physical Education and Sports presented their various programmes for Sports against crime and mechanism for collaboration between the department and the respective associations through the use of liaison personnel. The Department of Physical Education outlined that they received additional human resources in the form of 6 additional workers. These workers would aid in carrying out the various programs which the department promises to reach all corners of the country with activities everyone can participate in.

The Chairman and manager of the National Sports Council outlined plans for restorative works at the Arnos Vale Playing Field made possible by budget allocation to the Ministry of Tourism Sports and Culture. Chairman Branch also briefed the meeting about a proposal to establish a modern Sports Performance Centre that will eclipse most other like facilities in the English speaking Caribbean. The Sports performance centre will be twinned with a Full-sized gym and both facilities are earmarked for the Arnos Vale Complex.

The National Sports Council, National Lotteries Authority in collaboration with St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation are also in the process of entering an agreement which will see three community fields lit. This initiative would allow for use of the identified facilities beyond sunset facilitating many persons who usually have a very short time after work to get in training or fitness work.

The meeting agreed to convene stakeholder’s meetings quarterly for 2019 and going forward given the heavy sporting agenda this year.

NSC, Subway Team up with Young Artist to Share Message

The walls of the Arnos Vale Sports are currently getting a colorful makeover with an important message for users of facility. Stretched across the wall of the sports council would now be a sculptured mural that depicts healthy eating in a fun and modern way. The idea of the mural was brought to the attention of the Council by Artist, Shanique Stewart who claims to have had an eye on that ‘canvas’ for some time. According to Miss Stewart she wanted to do something that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and would get the attention of the various users who frequent the venue.

The idea was brought by the Artist to the manager of subway, Mr. Michael Huet. According to Mr. Huet in addition to spreading awareness about having a healthy lifestyle and more specifically healthy eating habits, promoting and empowering a young talented artist is something Subway was happy to do. Mr. Huet also Claimed that the mural will be beneficial not only to Subway and Miss Stewart but also to the community

The Manager of the National Sports Council Miles Bascombe expressed excitement about the project and is awaiting its completion, "Miss Stewart is a talented artist and her work will bring new life to the walls of the Complex. Many already health conscious individuals frequent the facility daily, I have no doubt that this message of healthy eating will resonate well with them."

Miss Stewart will complete the project on her next break from the Edna Manley College, School of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica, where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, Sculpture.
